Syria Peace Talks Discuss Aid And Detainees

Prisoner releases were on the agenda as talks between the warring sides in Syria's brutal conflict resumed in Geneva.

Delegates from the Syrian government  and opposition met for the first time in the same room on Saturday, although neither side spoke.

The negotiations are being conducted through UN mediator Lakhdar Brahimi, who has described the discussions aimed at brokering a peace deal to end the three-year civil war, as moving forward in "half steps".

Mr Brahimi has said the weekend talks will focus on what he has called "confidence building measures", aimed at establishing a positive atmosphere before more difficult issues are tackled, included the disputed opposition demand for a transitional government.

The opposition said it would call for the release of prisoners during Sunday's talks, which is understood will focus on women and children detainees.

They are also pressing for aid to be allowed into the centre of Homs, where rebels have been besieged by President Bashar al Assad's forces for 18 months.

But the Syrian government said the talks should focus on broader issues.

Bouthaina Shaaban, an adviser to Mr Assad and member of the delegation, told Sky News: "We are not against discussing anything. There's no veto on issues at the table."

It came as the UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said the Government is looking at allowing some Syrian refugees to come to the UK.

Mr Hague told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show: "I think there is a case for particularly helping people who are particularly vulnerable."
