William And Kate To Take New York By Storm

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 07 Desember 2014 | 23.59

By Hannah Thomas-Peter, Sky Correspondent

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will arrive in New York tonight, and have a hectic three-day schedule for their first visit to the Big Apple.

Prince William will travel to Washington DC for a meeting in the Oval Office with President Barack Obama.

He's also expected to deliver remarks at the World Bank, highlighting efforts to fight illegal wildlife trafficking.

That leaves Kate to take on a number of solo engagements, including visiting the Northside Centre for Child Development in Harlem, which specialises in providing mental health and other services to disadvantaged children.

Centre director Dr Thelma Dye said: "We are so pleased, it is such an honour.

"For her to bring global recognition to the importance of children's mental health is thrilling and it helps us do our work even better.

"We've done a lot of research on protocol and the children are so excited."

In the classroom, some three-year-olds told me they would be happy to share their toys with "The Princess" as they call Kate, confiding they believed she lived in a "ginormous" castle, and would arrive wearing a big ball gown dress.

Prince William is expected to meet former secretary of state Hillary Clinton and her daughter Chelsea at a conservation event when he returns to New York.

And with Prince George being looked after at home in the UK, the couple are due to attend an NBA basketball game between the Brooklyn Nets and The Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Nets are part-owned by hip-hop star Jay Z who often attends games with his wife Beyonce.

There's also a planned visit to the 9/11 memorial, a trip to the top of the Empire State building and a night of high glamour at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in honour of the couple's university, St Andrew's.

Wealthy New Yorkers have been clamouring for an invite and paying thousands of pounds per head at what's expected to be a star-studded bash.

Boutique maternity-wear designer Ariane Goldman told Sky News she'll be looking out for any trends sparked by the Duchess, who is around five months' pregnant.

"I think what Kate does that's fantastic is she's very true to herself and her own style, with a focus classic lines and elegant fabrics.

"I've never really seen Kate in pants (trousers), I'd really love to put her in a tuxedo look, I'd love to give her a bit of a New York-downtown edge."

Designer Rosie Pope agreed. She said: "She definitely sparks trends.

"Last time she was pregnant with Prince George people started asking for double breasted coats which hadn't even been a 'thing' in maternity up until then.

"She also wore some floral prints that were very quickly in high demand."

California Bid To Resume Death Row Executions

California Bid To Resume Death Row Executions

By Greg Milam, US Correspondent

Campaigners in California are calling on the state's government to resume executions on America's biggest death row.

More than 740 inmates live under the threat of death by lethal injection in a state that has not executed anyone for more than eight years.

California placed a moratorium on executions in 2006 over concerns about the cocktail of drugs used and earlier this year a federal judge declared the administration of it as "dysfunctional".

Judge Cormac Carney said keeping prisoners waiting for decades represented cruel and unusual punishment, a breach of the US Constitution's Eighth Amendment.

He wrote: "In California, the execution of a death sentence is so infrequent and the delays preceding it so extraordinary that the death penalty is deprived of any deterrent or retributive effect it might once have had."

It is estimated that the death penalty has cost the state more than $4bn (£2.6bn) since it was re-introduced in 1976.

A powerful typhoon has slammed into eastern Philippines, where 650,000 people have fled to safety in one of the largest peacetime evacuations in the nation's history.

Gusts of 130mph have been recorded alongside sustained winds of 109mph.

The typhoon made landfall on Saturday night in central Eastern Samar province - but the centre of the storm remains several hours away.

The winds, as well as pounding rain, has knocked out power lines and toppled trees in the town of Dolores.

Senior Inspector Alex Robin said: "We are totally in the dark here. The only light comes from flashlights."

The Philippines' 120,000-strong military is on alert to respond to a possible catastrophe.

Victim From Mass Mexican Kidnapping Identified

At least one of the 43 college students abducted in Mexico has been identified among charred remains found near a landfill site, an official has confirmed.

Forensic specialists from Argentina and Austria have been examining body parts found in mass graves and a rubbish dump in southwestern Mexico.

The remains are reported to be those of Alexander Mora.

Fellow student Omar Garcia, who was with Mr Mora's father when he learned the fate of his son, said: "He will never give up.

"He will never get over his pain, but what he wants to tell all of you, and what we all want to say is this: We want justice."

The trainee teachers went missing on September 26 after clashes with police in the southern city of Iguala, that claimed the lives of six people.

The attorney general has said they were attacked by officers on the orders of the city's mayor Jose Luis Abarca, who has since been arrested.

Prosecutors say the 43 students were then handed over by corrupt police to a drug gang, that killed them and burnt their bodies.

Three suspected gang members have confessed to carrying out the massacre.

Investigators have recovered only small fragments of bones to identify the victims.

The disappearance of the students at the hands of a corrupt public official, and the slow response of the federal authorities to the outrage has sparked a furious backlash cross Mexico.

Tens of thousands have taken to the streets in protest, with some calling for President Enrique Pena Nieto to resign.

The case has come to signify the abuse of authority and corruption which is rife in Mexican society.

British Embassy In Cairo Shut By Security Fears

The British embassy in Cairo has been closed to the public due to unspecified security concerns.

No details were given of the nature of the fears but officials said they hoped public services at the mission would resume as soon as possible.

The Foreign Office travel advice for Egypt warns there is a "high threat from terrorism".

"Terrorists continue to plan attacks in Egypt. Attacks could be indiscriminate and occur without prior warning. Foreigners could be targeted in tourist resorts or other locations frequented by foreigners," it says.

"Previous attacks have almost exclusively targeted the security forces, their facilities and other government buildings."

The British Consulate-General's office in Alexandria remains open.

Egypt has been battling an Islamist insurgency that predominantly carries out attacks in the Sinai Peninsula, near the border with Israel, Gaza and the Suez Canal.

Hundreds of police and soldiers have been killed over the past year and on Monday the Ansar Beit al Maqdis group, which has sworn allegiance to Islamic State, claimed it was behind the killing of an American oil engineer in the western desert in August.

Cairo has also been targeted by small-scale bombings, which have usually caused only limited injuries.

The embassy was closed as airport officials launched tough new rules requiring Egyptians to have a permit to travel to Turkey, a move aimed at stopping people joining Islamist militant groups in Iraq and Syria.

Egyptians already need prior permission to travel to Syria, Iraq and Jordan.

David Haines' Widow Brands IS Killers 'Cowards'

By Katie Stallard, in Sisak, Croatia

The widow of murdered aid worker David Haines has told Sky News the militants who killed her husband are cowards.

Speaking at their home in Sisak, Croatia, in her first television interview, Dragana Haines said:  "They consider themselves brave, but that's not bravery.

"It's a cowardly act to behead someone who has his hands tied behind his back, who is kneeling.

"You are a coward if you are going to behead someone who is helpless. You're not even a human being.

"You must be a monster to do something like that."

Mr Haines grew up in Scotland and served as an aircraft engineer in the RAF, but he found his calling in humanitarian work.

He met Dragana, his second wife, in post-war Yugoslavia.

He was working for a German reconstruction charity, and she was a translator for the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

They married in 2010 and settled in Croatia, where their daughter, Athea, was born.

In March 2013, he was kidnapped while working for a French aid agency in Syria.

"Every day was a challenge," Mrs Haines said.

"Waking up in the morning and thinking OK should I be hopeful? Will it be a day when they will call me, or he will call me and say 'OK I'm free, I'm coming back'?

"Or will it be a day when they will call me and say something bad has happened?"

In June, Islamic State released a video showing Mr Haines, and warning he would be next to be killed.

"I saw him in the video," Mrs Haines said through tears.

Hundreds Of Anarchists Held After Greek Riots

By Anthee Carassava, in Athens

Greek police have rounded up 296 anarchists in connection with violent riots that ripped through the Greek capital and five other cities across the country overnight.

The violence - among the worst witnessed in years - erupted from what initially looked like a peaceful protest march marking the sixth anniversary of the fatal police shooting of an unarmed teenager, Alexandros Grigoropoulos.

Black-clad anarchists penetrated the march, launching attacks against riot police and going on a rampage in the centre of Athens.

At least 22 store fronts were gutted. Banks were fire-bombed and cars set on fire, turning Athens into a war zone for hours.

Even the country's Catholic cathedral, nestled in the heart of the Greek capital, was attacked, as anarchists ripped out slabs gracing its marble entrance, breaking them and hurling them at riot police.

Some also carried placards referring to the police shooting of black teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson in the US.

Violence gripped six other cities across the country, with solidarity marches even spilling over into neighbouring Turkey.

Anarchists are now holed up inside a university, regrouping ahead of a rash of protests scheduled for later on Sunday. They want the government to allow a fellow anarchist, jailed for robbery charges, to be freed so he can attend university.

Nikos Romanos, who was a close friend of the teenager who was gunned down by police six years ago, has been on hunger strike for 28 days, demanding he be released from prison to attend a local university which accepted him earlier this year.

The government has turned down the request, citing security reasons.

In a desperate bid to defuse the situation, Greek prime minister Antonis Samaras has stepped in, agreeing to meet Romanos' parents on Monday.

With Greece entering its sixth year of recession and the government continuing to implement unrelenting austerity, authorities fear the protests could trigger bigger shows of violence and social upheaval in response to the country's prolonged financial crisis.

Parliament is voting on a new state budget. Despite improved financial data, more brutal cuts are in store to cover a fiscal gap of  €2.5bn (£1.97bn).

Sony Hack A 'Righteous Deed', Says North Korea

North Korea has denied involvement in a cyber attack on Sony Pictures, but hailed it as a "righteous deed", possibly carried out by its supporters in protest at an upcoming film about Kim Jong-Un.

The Interview, a comedy involving a fictional CIA plot to assassinate the leader of the isolated communist state, has infuriated Pyongyang, which has previously declared it an "act of war", and warned of "merciless retaliation".

The attack, by a group calling itself the Guardians Of Peace, crippled key systems at Sony Pictures, led to the disclosure of personal information about 47,000 employees, and saw blockbuster movies, including Second World War drama Fury starring Brad Pitt, being leaked online.

There has been speculation that the attack was Pyongyang's retaliation for the Sony movie.

North Korea's top military body, the National Defence Commission, rejected reports of its involvement as "false rumour", but criticised Sony for "abetting a terrorist act while hurting the dignity of the supreme leadership of the (North)".

It told the state-run news agency: "The hacking into the Sony Pictures might be a righteous deed of the supporters and sympathisers with the (North) in response to its appeal."

Meanwhile, forensics experts hired by Sony to investigate the massive cyber attack at its Hollywood studio said the breach was unprecedented, well-planned and carried out by an "organised group".

However, no indication was given of who was behind the hacking campaign.

The company has faced accusations of poor security in the wake of the attack, underlined by the revelation that the media giant saved thousands of internal passwords in a folder called 'Passwords'.

Uber Cab Driver Arrested Over New Delhi Rape

Police in India have arrested an Uber cab driver suspected of raping a 25-year-old female passenger.

He was detained in his home town in the state of Uttar Pradesh and will appear before a court in New Delhi on Monday.

"The prime accused in the case has been arrested," Madhur Verma, deputy commissioner of Delhi police, told Reuters.

The alleged victim, a finance company executive, told police she dozed off in the taxi as she was returning home from dinner with friends.

She woke to find the cab parked in a secluded place where she was assaulted and raped, before she was dumped near her home in northern New Delhi.

The woman, who took a photo of the vehicle's number plate, said the driver threatened to kill her if she reported the attack.

The attack is a blow to Uber's reputation in India, where women are extremely safety-conscious after a string of rapes that sparked global outrage.

Among them was the fatal gang-rape of a student on a moving bus in Delhi in December 2012.

US-based Uber said earlier it was working with police to solve the latest "terrible crime", and the driver's licence had been suspended.

"Our thoughts are with the victim of this terrible crime and we are working with the police as they investigate," spokeswoman Evelyn Tay said in a statement.

"Safety is Uber's highest priority and in India we work with licensed driver-partners to provide a safe transportation option."

However, Mr Verma said the company had been guilty of "a lot of negligence in terms of security".

"There is no GPS (global positioning system) installed in the vehicle and there was no background check or driver verification done with the police," he said.

Uber has been gaining popularity in India, especially among young, urban workers who use its smartphone app to hire and pay for rides.

But the firm, founded in 2009 and now present in more than 200 cities throughout the world, has faced privacy concerns.

Uber was caught in a storm in the US last month over claims passengers were being spied on using an internal "God view" tool.

Its rapid expansion has also caused tensions with traditional taxi drivers, especially in Europe.

Syria Accuses Israel Of Damascus Airstrikes

Syria has accused Israel of carrying out airstrikes against two government-held areas near the capital Damascus, says state TV.

It said the "safe areas targeted" were Dimas to the west of the city and a site close to the international airport in the east.

The country's state news agency called the attack "an aggression against Syria" and said there were no reports of casualties.

There was no immediate comment from Israeli officials.

Israel has carried out several airstrikes in Syria since the uprising against President Bashar Assad began in March 2011.

Most of the strikes have targeted sophisticated weapons systems believed to be destined for the militant Hizbollah group in Lebanon.

The Israeli air force and army have launched several strikes against Syrian military positions since the outbreak of the civil war.

The most recent air raid was in March and targeted military positions in the Quneitra region that borders Israel.

More follows...
