Islamic State militants have continued their "cultural cleansing" of Iraq and Syria - this time blowing up the ancient city of Nimrud.

A video posted online appears to show the terror group's fighters smashing artefacts at the 3,000-year-old site near Mosul in northern Iraq.

Militants are seen with large barrels of powder in a room lined with gypsum slabs, beautifully carved with representations of Assyrian figures.

The explosion sends a huge mushroom cloud into the sky and turns yet another important part of history to dust and fragments.

Fighters hack away at statues with sledgehammers and carve them up with angle grinders, claiming God had "honoured" them by "removing and destroying everything that was held to be equal to him and worshipped without him".

Turkey's Anger Over Pope's 'Genocide' Remarks

Turkey has criticised Pope Francis' use of the word "genocide" to describe the mass killings of Armenians during the First World War.

The foreign minister in Ankara, Mevlut Cavusoglu, called the Pontiff's allegations "baseless" and "far from the legal and historical reality".

He added that religious authorities were "not the places to incite resentment and hatred".

Turkey had earlier summoned the Vatican envoy to Ankara, Archbishop Antonino Lucibello, to request an explanation over the Pope's use of the word "genocide".

He made the comments during a mass in Saint Peter's Basilica to mark the centenary of the Ottoman Turk murders of Armenians.

He said: "In the past century our human family has lived through three massive and unprecedented tragedies.

"The first, which is widely considered 'the first genocide of the 20th century', struck your own Armenian people."

The 78-year old head of the Roman Catholic Church had been under pressure to use the word genocide to describe the bloodshed, despite the risk of alienating an important ally in the fight against Islamist militants.

According to a Turkish official speaking to the Reuters news agency, the Vatican's ambassador has been told that the remarks have caused a "problem of trust" - and that Ankara was "deeply sorry and disappointed" by the comments.

While many historians describe the events between 1915 and 1917 as the 20th century's first genocide, Turkey strongly denies the accusation.

Armenians say up to 1.5 million of their people were slaughtered as the Ottoman Empire fell apart, and have long sought to win international recognition of the massacres as genocide.

Turkey argues that 300,000 to 500,000 Armenians and as many Turks died in the civil war when Armenians rose up against their Ottoman rulers and sided with invading Russian troops.

The Pontiff said the other two genocides of the 20th century were "perpetrated by Nazism and Stalinism".

He added: "And more recently there have been other mass killings, like those in Cambodia, Rwanda, Burundi and Bosnia. It seems that humanity is incapable of putting a halt to the shedding of innocent blood."

Armenia's President Serzh Sargsyan also celebrated the mass, which included elements of the Armenian Catholic rite.

Francis proclaimed a 10th-century Armenian monk a "Doctor of the Church" - making Saint Gregory just one of 36 saintly theologians whose writings are considered to hold key insights into the Catholic faith.

The Vatican has a long history of support for the Armenians, with John Paul II using the word genocide in a joint statement signed with the Armenian patriarch in 2000.

He said: "The Armenian genocide, which began the century, was a prologue to horrors that would follow."

But it provoked outrage in Turkey, and a year later during a trip to Armenia John Paul II avoided using the term, instead choosing the Armenian expression "Metz Yeghern" - meaning "Great Evil".

Last week, TV star Kim Kardashian, her husband Kanye West, daughter North and sister Khloe, visited Armenia to celebrate her family's roots and mark the centenary.

Kardashian, whose ancestors emigrated to the US from an area that now lies in Turkey, is reportedly making a documentary about the Armenian WW1 killings.

Video Shows Family In Deadly Brawl With Police

Police have released video of a deadly brawl outside a Wal-Mart store in which they claim they were forced to use electronic stun guns to stop a family from attacking them.

The violent encounter happened after officers in Cottonwood, Arizona, were called to the store after a report that an employee was shoved by one of the family members.

A brawl broke out outside after police tried to separate family members for questioning while they investigated the incident.

Enoch Gaver, 21, was killed by an officer in the confrontation, while David Gaver, 28, was shot in the abdomen. He has since been released from hospital.

Police Sergeant Jeremy Daniels suffered a gunshot wound.

A Wal-Mart employee who tried to help suffered a broken arm in the incident on 21 March.

Four members of the family were arrested: 55-year-old Peter Gaver, 52-year-old Ruth Gaver, 27-year-old Nathan Gaver, and 29-year-old Jeremiah Gaver.

They were held on various charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest and hindering prosecution.

Islamic State's Trail Of Historical Oblivion

The ancient city of Nimrud is just the latest piece of history to be wiped from the map as Islamic State fighters continue their trail of destruction through Syria and Iraq.

The Sunni extremist group has released a video appearing to show black-clad militants smashing up artefacts before razing the 3,000-year-old Assyrian site in a mushroom cloud of dust and destroyed treasures.

Their mission is made clear with one fighter saying: "God has honoured us to remove all of these idols and statues."

IS, which holds a third of Iraq and Syria, has been destroying Christian, Jewish and Islamic shrines in its self-declared caliphate because it says they promote idolatry and violate its interpretation of Islamic law.

But with these acts of cultural cleansing, apparently in the name of religion, IS is accused of hypocrisy with authorities claiming its fighters are looting archaeological sites to fund their atrocities.

:: Nimrud

Many relics from Nimrud, which was founded in the 13th century BC and was one of Iraq's most famous archaeological sites, are in foreign museums.

But a number of giant statues, depicting winged beasts with human heads, and stones friezes have now seemingly been turned into fragments by IS explosives.

The militants are believed to hold around 15% of the 12,000 registered archaeological sites in Iraq - a country dubbed the "cradle of civilisation" for its ancient historical importance.

And historians fear none of them are safe, and similar destruction may be taking place in IS-controlled areas of neighbouring Syria.

:: Hatra

A week ago, IS released another video apparently showing the bulldozing of 2,000-year old Hatra, some 70 miles southwest of Mosul, in northern Iraq.

Hatra like Nimrud, 20 miles away, is a UNESCO world heritage site, and their destruction was condemned as a "war crime" by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon.

The footage shows jihadists apparently destroying artefacts with sledgehammers and rifles at the fortress city, dating back to the Seleucid empire, which controlled a large part of the world conquered by Alexander the Great.

:: Khorsabad

Last month, IS reportedly pillaged the ancient archaeological site of Khorsabad, some 10 miles northeast of Mosul.

Khorsabad was built as a new capital of Assyria by King Sargon II shortly after he came to power in 721 BC and abandoned after his death in 705 BC.

With an 80ft-thick wall and seven gates, it was renowned for shedding light on Assyrian art and architecture.

:: Mosul

In February, IS released a video of fighters smashing statues in Mosul's city museum.

It also shows a man in black drilling through a winged bull, an Assyrian protective deity dating back to the 7th century BC, at a nearby archaeological site.

A caption says the artefacts did not exist in the time of the Prophet Mohammed, and were put on display by "devil worshippers" - a term used by IS to describe the Yazidi minority in Iraq.

The same month, IS reportedly destroyed more Iraqi history by torching thousands of books and rare manuscripts in the Mosul Library.

UNESCO said burning the tomes, which included 18th-century manuscripts and Ottoman-era books, could be "one of the most devastating acts of destruction of library collections in human history".

Officials fear more than 112,000 manuscripts and books, some of which were registered on a UNESCO rarities list, may have been lost.

In July last year, IS apparently razed a Muslim shrine in Mosul, said to be the burial place of the prophet Jonah, who in the Bible and Koran is swallowed by a whale.

Residents said militants ordered everyone out of the Mosque of the Prophet Younis, or Jonah, then blew it up.

Obama And Castro In Historic Meeting

The leaders of the US and Cuba have held their first formal meeting in more than half a century - clearing the way for a thawing of relations that seemed unthinkable to citizens of both countries only a few years ago.

US President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro met in a small conference room in Panama, where they sat side by side.

Mr Obama said the event was "obviously a historic meeting", adding that his country was ready to "turn the page" with Cuba on the past.

He said: "It was my belief it was time to try something new, that it was important for us to engage with Cuban government. And, more importantly, with Cuban people."

He thanked Mr Castro for his "spirit of openness" but warned that significant differences still remain.

Mr Castro said he was ready to discuss issues such as human rights and press freedom, saying: "Everything can be on the table."

But he warned that the two countries may "agreed to disagree" at times, adding that both sides must be "very patient".

The meeting was held on the sideline of the Summit of the Americas, which this year included Cuba for the first time.

It was not publicly announced in advance but White House officials had suggested the two leaders were hoping for an opportunity to meet while in Panama.

The meeting came just hours after the two shared a handshake as the summit opened.

Four months ago Mr Castro and Mr Obama simultaneously announced an ending of hostilities.

President Obama said starkly: "Fifty years of isolation hasn't worked."

It is expected that the US will soon agree to remove Cuba's name from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, something that would also open the door to loans and aid for the South American nation after decades of suffering under the trade embargo.

Fidel Castro came to power in 1959 after overthrowing the US-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista.

For half a century, the leader of the first communist country in the western hemisphere was a thorn in America's side.

In 2006, after abdominal surgery, he started the transfer of power to his brother Raul, who took the landmark step in 2014 of appearing with the US  President.

Hillary Clinton Set To Confirm Presidency Bid

By Greg Milam, US Correspondent

Hillary Clinton is today expected to confirm she is running for the Democratic nomination to be the president of the US, effectively firing the starting gun on the 2016 election campaign.

The former Secretary of State and First Lady has long been the runaway favourite to be the party's candidate for the election next November.

It is expected she will make the announcement via a video message on Twitter before heading off to a first campaign event in Iowa.

The Midwest state was where her last campaign for president in 2008 began to unravel when she lost the caucuses to then senator Barack Obama.

Iowans are the first to vote for their candidates and Mrs Clinton is reported to be planning on a low key meeting a small group of voters. She is trying to counter the image that she is out of touch with real Americans.

The state, which has traditionally been evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans, is currently hosting its annual horse fair and attendees gave Mrs Clinton's expected candidacy a mixed reception.

Katherine Resler said: "I won't vote for her. I don't think she is very trustworthy. I don't think she relates well to other people."

Hannah Hilsabeck said: "I definitely think we need to have a woman in office. I think that would be huge for all women everywhere and just show we can do just as good a job as a guy can."

Opinion polls have consistently put Mrs Clinton ahead of potential Republican rivals but the gap has narrowed in recent weeks.

Boy's Limbs Bitten Off In Deadly Shark Attack

A 13-year-old boy has been killed by a shark while he was surfing off the French island of Reunion in the Indian Ocean.

The child's arms and legs were bitten off as well as part of his stomach in the attack in an area which was off-limits.

Rescuers arrived quickly but could not save him, according to the officials.

The island has experienced a rise in shark activity in recent years.

It was the 16th such attack on the island since 2011, including seven which have been deadly.

After a non-fatal shark attack in February, authorities banned all water activities outside special areas watched by lifeguards.

This measure has resulted in a decline in tourism on the island lying to the east of Madagascar.

Video: Policeman Dragged Along On Car Bonnet

A policeman was dragged along on a car bonnet for more than half a mile by a driver who was trying to flee.

The motorist had been asked to stop by traffic officer He Mingdao because the vehicle's number plate was covered.

But the driver, called Zhou, ignored demands for him to pull over in Fengyang County, in east China's Anhui Province.

He allegedly drove one of the front wheels against the officer's leg, forcing Mr He to cling on to the bonnet as the car sped off.

Another traffic policeman was chasing behind the car until it was stopped about a kilometre later by other policemen who came to help.

Officer He explained: "I asked him to pull over, but he screamed at me in the car, pointed at me and ignored me.

"The driver then jerked the steering wheel, so the car's off-front wheel ran against my leg, forcing me to clinch to the engine hood.

"He then sped up, so I had to firmly clutch to the hood and dared not move. So I was dragged on the hood for one kilometre."

Officer He was not seriously injured, while Zhou was detained on a charge of obstructing public business.

Malta Votes To Keep Bird Shooting Tradition

Malta has voted to continue its controversial tradition of spring hunting in which birds migrating across the Mediterranean are killed before they can breed, according to the preliminary results of a referendum.

Supporters defend the practice as a long-standing custom, while opponents see it as a cruel tradition that often flouts the law.

Initial results suggested the pro-hunting camp had got 51% of the vote, a winning margin of around 5,000 votes.

An official declaration is expected later on Sunday.

Hunters' federation president Joe Percici Calascione said: "We did not win anything, we just did not lose."

However, raucous cheering from hunters at the polling station suggested many saw it as a victory.

Mr Calascione added: "We were fighting for our right to retain the possibility of hunting in spring and people have understood our campaign."

He appealed to hunters to remain calm, amid reports of celebratory gunfire in the countryside.

In 2009, Malta was found guilty by the European Court of Justice of permitting the hunting of birds during their return from Africa to breeding grounds in Europe, before they had a chance to reproduce.

While spring hunting is banned by the EU Birds Directive, Malta applies for a short period of exemption every year.

Shooters are currently legally permitted to kill 11,000 turtle doves and 5,000 quail.

Some hunters have been accused of exceeding the limit and illegally shooting other birds, including swifts, storks and yellow-legged gulls.

British naturalist and television presenter Chris Packham has in the past accused the authorities in Malta of failing to stop the large-scale hunting of migratory birds.

Activists say the emphasis should be on protecting all kinds of birds from hunters.

Saviour Balzan, a spokesman for the anti-spring hunting campaign, said: "It seems that the majority has voted for spring hunting to stay.

"While we respect the decision, we will continue working for the protection of the environment."

The country's prime minister, Joseph Muscat, voted in favour of keeping the spring hunt.

He said Malta's citizens had given the hunters a "last chance" and vowed that illegal hunting "will not be tolerated".

'Syria-Bound' Briton On Way Home To UK

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 12 April 2015 | 23.59

One of nine Britons held in Turkey on suspicion of trying to illegally enter Syria is on his way home after being deported.

Waheed Ahmed - the son of Rochdale councillor Shakil Ahmed - will fly from Dalaman into Manchester on Sunday night, according to Sky sources.

The remaining eight will return on Tuesday, it is understood.

All of the group are from the same family.

Mr Ahmed, 21, was with his aunt, two cousins and one of their wives when they were stopped in Turkey, near the Syrian border. They had four children with them.

Most of the group flew from Manchester on 27 March but Mr Ahmed joined them three days later on a flight from Birmingham.

There were reportedly concerns about his behaviour in the months before he was arrested.

Mohammed Shafiq, who is a friend of Shakil Ahmed, said of Waheed: "There were concerns in the last six months to a year about a change in his behaviour.

"And a change in his attitude towards various different issues."

He also told Sky News: "That was causing concern for people in the community and his family."

Other family members detained include Zareeda Bi, 47, Maboob Yasin, 22, Habib Yasin, 24, Samia Bi, 22, and youngsters aged one, three, eight and 11.

Police are trying to establish their reason for travelling to the Syrian border.

Officers have searched at least five homes in the Manchester area, including that of the Labour councillor.

Eduardo de Jesus Ferreira was killed at the Complexo Alemao shantytown in Rio de Janeiro, sparking protests in the area.

His mother Terezinha Maria de Jesus told G1 news portal her son was at the door of their house when she saw a police officer shoot him.

Authorities said the officers involved in the anti-gang operation have been suspended while an investigation is carried out.

It came after Elizabeth de Moura Francisco, a 41-year-old housewife from Complexo Alemao, was killed by a stray bullet in her house on Wednesday.

Residents took to the streets in anger at the killings, with some hurling rocks and bottles at police lines.

Anti-Gay Indiana Pizzeria Raises $840,000

Written By Unknown on Minggu, 05 April 2015 | 23.59

By Sky News US Team

An online fundraiser for an Indiana pizzeria that attracted nationwide opprobrium after its owners said they would never cater for a gay wedding has collected more than $840,000 (£563,000).

Nearly 30,000 people sent money for Memories Pizza in Indiana through a GoFundMe page that has now stopped taking donations.

The restaurant in the town of Walkerton found itself in the eye of the storm over Indiana's Religious Freedom Restoration Act after co-owner Crystal O'Connor spoke out on Tuesday.

Citing the new law and her Christian beliefs, she told a local TV reporter they would refuse requests to provide pizza for a hypothetical same-sex wedding reception.

Her father and co-owner Kevin O'Connor clarified later they would serve gay customers, just not same-sex nuptials.

Amid a nationwide backlash in which the parlour reportedly received threatening phone calls as well as graphic online reviews, they shut the business on Wednesday.

An Indiana girls' golf coach is facing a criminal investigation after she allegedly tweeted a suggestion that the restaurant be burned down.

In an interview on Saturday with Fox News Business, Ms O'Connor said she's not ready yet to reopen the pizzeria, but she thanks God for the outpouring of support.

"God has blessed us for standing up for what we believe, and not denying him," she said.

The online fundraiser was launched by TheBlaze, a conservative news network founded by Glenn Beck.

Lawrence Jones, a TheBlaze reporter who set up the GoFundMe page, said the original aim was to pull in $25,000 (£16,750) for the O'Connors.

The final total was $842,592 (£564,739).

"Our goal was simply to help take one thing off this family's plate as the strangers sought to destroy them," he said.

The legislation at the centre of the gay-rights debate has since been revised.

Facing national outcry from business leaders, Indiana's Republican governor this week ordered lawmakers to tweak the measure he had signed into law a week earlier.

The state of Arkansas followed suit by watering down a similar bill its legislature had just passed.

The original text of the legislation made no mention of gay or lesbian people, but prohibited state laws that "substantially burden" a person's ability to follow his or her religious beliefs.

Revenge Porn Site Operator Jailed For 18 Years

A man who posted thousands of sexually explicit photos of victims on a "revenge porn" website has been jailed for 18 years.

Kevin Bollaert, 28, was convicted in February of running a website that hosted more than 10,000 explicit photographs.

The website - ugotposted.com - was launched in December 2012, enabling photos to be posted without the subject's permission.

Bollaert, of San Diego, ran a parallel site - changemyreputation.com - that then charged individuals up to $350 (£235) each to remove the pictures.

Unlike other revenge porn websites, where photos are anonymous, ugotposted.com required the poster to include full details of the subject.

These included their full name, location, age and Facebook profile link, with an option to include the phone number too.

Victims included teachers, wives and professionals. The compromising photos cost people jobs, damaged relationships and led to one attempted suicide.

Prosecutors say Bollaert earned about $30,000 (£20,000) from people who paid to remove the images.

California Attorney General Kamala Harris said it marked the first criminal prosecution of a cyber-exploitation website operator in the US.

Victims of the site spoke in court in San Diego immediately before sentencing, describing the damage done to their reputations.

"My life has gone through a down-spiral," one of Bollaert's victims told Judge David Gill.

She said she had been ostracised by her mother because of the shame she brought on her family.

Another victim, Nicole, added: "I have a hard time acknowledging Mr Bollaert as a human being. I can't get away from the devastation."

Bollaert's parents pleaded for leniency, insisting their son was remorseful. However judge Gill called Bollaert's conduct "outrageous".

Mr Harris said Friday's sentence "makes clear there will be severe consequences for those that profit from the exploitation of victims online.

"We will continue to be vigilant and investigate and prosecute those who commit these deplorable acts," she said.

Ex-All Black Held Over Alleged Sex Assault

Former New Zealand rugby union captain Mils Muliaina has been bailed after being arrested on suspicion of sexual assault.

The 34-year-old Connacht full back, who earned 100 caps for the All Blacks, is suspected of involvement in an incident in Cardiff last month.

He was forced out of Friday night's European Challenge Cup quarter-final tie against Gloucester after 34 minutes because of injury.

However, shortly after the final whistle, television pictures showed Muliaina being taken away by police.

A spokesman for Gloucestershire Police said: "A man in his 30s was arrested at Kingsholm Stadium on Friday 3 April on suspicion of sexual assault in relation to an incident in Cardiff in March.

"The man has been handed over to officers from South Wales Police who are investigating the incident."

A South Wales Police spokesman said: "A 34-year-old man from the Galway area in the Irish Republic has been arrested on suspicion of committing a sexual assault.

"He has been released on police bail pending further investigation."

Details of the incident have not been confirmed.

Muliaina was in the Welsh capital playing for Connacht against Cardiff Blues on 6 March.

Cop Kills Man 'After Mistaking Gun For Taser'

By Sky News US Team

A 73-year-old Oklahoma reserve police officer "inadvertently" shot dead a suspect after confusing his gun for his Taser, say authorities.

Tulsa County deputy Robert Bates is on administrative leave after Thursday's killing.

It happened as police tried to apprehend Eric Courtney Harris, 44, in the car park of a Dollar General store.

The convicted felon was allegedly trying to sell a 9mm semi-automatic pistol and ammunition to an undercover police officer.

When members of the Tulsa Violent Crimes unit moved in to arrest Harris during the sting operation he fled on foot, say police.

The reserve officer, a member of the task force, was among the task force deputies.

Police say they caught Harris and forced him to the ground, but he continued to resist arrest.

The officers "observed him reaching for his waistband area ... causing concern for the deputies' safety", according to the authorities.

At this point, police said the reserve officer "was attempting to use less lethal force, believing he was utilising a Taser, when he inadvertently discharged his service weapon, firing one round which struck Harris".

He died later in hospital.

It is not clear if the suspect was carrying a gun at the time of the arrest.

Tulsa County Sheriff's Office said the reserve deputy would be interviewed on Monday as part of their investigation into the shooting.

Moon Bathed In Red Light During Brief Eclipse

The Moon was tinged with red for a short lunar eclipse which was seen by stargazers in parts of the Pacific Rim.

The eclipse - in which the Moon passes through the Earth's shadow - was seen in northern Japan, parts of Australia and areas of western North America.

It began at 7.15pm in Japan and at around 8.54pm the moon was fully covered by the Earth's shadow.

Residents of Tokyo – keen to see the local cherry blossoms with the rare background – gave up on viewing the so-called "blood moon" due to thick cloud.

Players 'Cheat Death' After Shotgun Bus Attack

Shots have been fired at a bus carrying Turkey's Fenerbahce football team, injuring at least one person.

Reports on Fenerbahce TV said the driver was injured after a shotgun was repeatedly fired at the coach.

The driver was hit in the face and taken to hospital, the club's vice president Mahmut Uslu said.

Mr Uslu, who was on the bus at the time, accused the attackers of trying to "crash the bus and kill the players".

Fenerbahce midfielder Mehmet Topal told reporters: "We cheated death. God protect us. I hope our driver will be all right. Words fail me. It's unbelievable."

The vehicle was hit as it drove to the airport following the team's 5-1 away win at the Black Sea side Caykur Rizespor in Turkey's Super Lig.

There was no mention of any injuries to anyone else but the driver.

Several pictures of the bus were posted on the club's website, revealing a shattered side window and damage to the front windscreen.

The pictures also showed blood on the driver's seat and the steering wheel.

The bus was going over a viaduct on its way from the city of Rize to the airport in Trabzon to return to Istanbul.

Trabzon governor Abdil Celil Oz confirmed the gun attack on the bus and said the driver's life was not in danger.

"At first we thought stones had been thrown at the bus but forensic investigators at the scene have concluded it was an armed attack," he said.

The governor said he had received a phone call from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a supporter of the Istanbul club, asking him about the investigation.

The Turkish Football Federation released a statement condemning the attack.

Hadron Collider Restarts In Hunt For Dark Matter

The world's biggest atom smasher has restarted after its two-year shutdown.

Scientists at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) hope the upgrade will allow them to smash protons together with nearly double the energy previously reached.

Analysis of the "rubble" could lead to the discovery of new sub-atomic particles, revolutionising our understanding of physics.

Two beams of protons will be sent in opposite directions around LHC's 17-mile tunnel circuit on the Franco-Swiss border.

Powerful magnets bend the beams so they collide at points around the track where four laboratories monitor the smash-ups.

The sensors examine the collisions for new particles and the forces that hold them together.

In 2012, the LHC discovered the Higgs Boson, an elementary particle that gives other particles mass.

During the next phase, experts hope to investigate "dark matter" - the invisible material said to make up much of the universe.

For the past two years, the giant machine has had its maximum collision capacity boosted from eight teraelectronvolts (TeV) to 14 TeV - seven TeV for each beam.

The initial tests will see engineers inject two beams into the tunnel at a lower energy of 450 gigaelectronvolts, but with no collisions.

If all goes well, "particle collisions at an energy of 13 TeV could start as early as June," the European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) said.

Russia and the Red Cross have called for an urgent ceasefire in Yemen to allow in aid, replenish struggling hospitals and evacuate foreigners.

A Saudi-led coalition has been launching air strikes in the country to repel advances by Houthi forces who have taken over large areas of Yemen over the last six months, including the capital Sanaa.

But the Red Cross says a 24-hour ceasefire is needed to deliver aid and address "dire" conditions.

Hospitals are said to be low on medicine, with the streets of the southern port city of Aden reportedly littered by bodies.

Food and water supplies are also dwindling, according to the aid agency.

A Russian draft resolution to the United Nations demanded "regular and obligatory humanitarian pauses in the air strikes by the coalition to allow all concerned states and international organisations to evacuate their citizens and personnel".

The UN has so far not agreed on the resolution but officials said they hoped to have something in place by Monday.

Houthi rebels have gained ground in Aden after fierce street fighting against forces loyal to president Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi - who has fled the country.

Witnesses said the Houthis had bombarded residential areas in Aden and set buildings on fire.

"Snipers, who took position on the roofs of provincial government buildings, targeted passers by and members of the popular committees," one pro-Hadi fighter told the AFP news agency.

Saudi planes parachuted in weapons, including rocket-propelled grenades, on Friday, but the Houthis still gained ground.

The 11-day campaign has also involved forces from Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman

Adel al Jubeir, Saudi ambassador to the US, said sending ground troops remained "on the table" but would not comment on claims that special forces were already in Yemen.

The conflict has pitted Shia Iran, which backs the Houthis, against Sunni-dominated Saudi Arabia, its regional rival.

There are fears the fighting could escalate into a full-on sectarian civil war.

Official's Son Among Kenya Massacre Gunmen

Kenya has begun three days of mourning for the 148 people killed in the university massacre as one of the four gunmen is identified.

Students who survived the attack by militant group al Shabaab have been reunited with their families.

One survivor, Cynthia Cheroitich, 19, told how she hid from gunmen by covering herself with clothes in a wardrobe.

She was found by security forces two days after the attack at Garissa University College, as medical staff carried out the grim task of dealing with victims' bodies.

Another 19-year-old student, Daniel Machache, smeared blood over his body and pretended he was dead to survive the slaughter.

Survivors were taken on government buses to the Nyayo National Stadium, which has been turned into a disaster centre.

Many relatives at the stadium desperately tried to trace their loved ones and find out if they were dead, injured or simply missing.

Thursday's attack, in the northeastern town of Garissa, close to the Somalia border, left 142 students, three police officers and three soldiers dead.

Four gunmen strapped with explosives stormed the campus and singled out non-Muslim students to be murdered.

The interior ministry identified one of the terrorists as Abdirahim Abdullahi, the son of a Kenyan government official.

"The father had reported to security agents that his son had disappeared from home ... and was helping the police try to trace his son by the time the Garissa terror attack happened," a spokesman said.

The government has defended its response to the one-day siege as it emerged Kenyan special forces were not deployed to the university for at least seven hours.

"This is negligence on a scale that borders on the criminal," Kenya's popular Nation newspaper wrote in its editorial on Sunday.

It emphasised how survivors said "the gunmen, who killed scores of students with obvious relish, took their time".

Some journalists based in Nairobi drove 225 miles to Garissa and arrived before special forces, who flew there.

Kenyans are dedicating Easter Sunday prayer services to the victims, marking the first of three days of national mourning.

President Uhuru Kenyatta said the militants would face justice for the "mindless slaughter" and vowed to retaliate in the "severest way".

On Saturday, Somalia-based terror group al Shabaab warned of a "long, gruesome war" unless Kenya withdraws its troops from Somalia.

Hours after the warning, crowds gathered in Garissa as police paraded the gunmen's bodies in the back of a pick-up truck.

Officers said it was to see whether anyone could identify the terrorists, who were piled up face down in the vehicle.

Some onlookers threw stones at the bodies as they passed.

In Nairobi's ethnic Somali district, demonstrators took to the streets protesting against al Shabaab and calling for unity in the country.

Five people have been arrested over the attack, including three "coordinators" captured as they fled towards Somalia.

The suspected mastermind, Mohamed Mohamud, a former teacher in Garissa, is still on the run.

The lawyer for one of five women held in China after campaigning for women's rights has told Sky News their treatment is beyond anything he could ever have imagined.

Wang Qiushi represents Wei Tingting, who was detained by Chinese authorities on 6 March with four other young women.

They were accused of "picking a quarrel" after they had planned a public campaign to end sexual harassment on International Women's Day.

In a coordinated police operation, the women - Zheng Churan, Li Tingting, both 25, Wei Tingting, 27, Wu Rongrong, 30 and Wang Man, 32 - were arrested in different parts of China and brought to Haidian Detention Centre in northwest Beijing.

Three of them remain in custody at the centre. The other two, Ms Wu and Ms Wang, have since been moved to a police hospital.

Plane Comes Off Runway At Canadian Airport

A plane has come off the runway at Halifax airport after making an "abrupt" landing, Air Canada said.

A handful of images posted on Twitter showed what appeared to be the fuselage lying on its belly on the tarmac. They also showed emergency chutes were inflated.

Another picture appeared to show a smashed nose cone while other reports said the port wing was also damaged.

The airline said 23 people were taken to a hospital for observation and treatment of minor injuries after all the passengers left the plane.

Halifax Stanfield International Airport tweeted: "We are thankful no serious injuries have been reported."

Some reports said that the aircraft became entangled in overhead electricity power cables as it came in to land, but airport officials said they could not provide confirmation.

One of the relatives waiting for passengers, tweeting as CherryBerryHFX, said: "People r safe, it really is a miracle  #AC624 Bounced & engine popped off, nose of plane damaged, wings off"

She added: "So proud of my new husband, caught many ppl as they evacuated #AC624 coming down the chute. Jagged metal everywhere."

The airport said its airfield remained closed.

Airport spokesman Peter Spurway said the aircraft touched down in stormy conditions.

"It came down pretty hard and then skidded off the runway," Mr Spurway said. He said he did not know whether runway conditions played a role.

There is a heavy snowfall warning in the Halifax region, with Environment Canada saying: "Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow."

Images from the airport's webcam showed snow on the ground and vehicles working to clear it from the taxiway.

Air Canada said a preliminary count indicated there were 132 passengers and five crew members. The flight had departed from Toronto at 9.05pm local time on Saturday and landed early on Sunday morning.

According to flight tracking service FlightAware, the plane concerned is an Airbus A320 with seating for around 150 people.

Power at the airport was briefly knocked out, but Nova Scotia Power said they had since restored it.

The cause of the outage was not immediately clear. Back-up generators were running when the flight landed and the runways were lit.

Because the power went off, an emergency response centre had to be moved to a nearby hotel.

The airport's website showed a number of flights had been cancelled on Sunday morning.

Militants Kill 39 As Nigerians Go To Polls

Officials say Boko Haram militants have killed 39 people in northeastern Nigeria, disrupting the country's presidential election.

All the attacks took place in areas where the military claimed to have driven the Islamic extremists away.

Residents of the town of Miringa said the militants set fire to people's homes early on Saturday and then shot them as they tried to escape. Twenty-five were reportedly killed.

Another 14 people, including a Gombe state legislator, were said to have died in later attacks on two other towns, Biri and Dukku.

It happened after authorities extended the voting period into Sunday following technical glitches.

After weeks of postponements, millions of Nigerians have voted in the most hotly-contested election since the end of military rule in 1999.

Though counting has begun in parts of the country, polling will continue into Sunday in some areas - including the largest city Lagos - after new machines failed to read voters' biometric cards.

President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife were among those affected after three card readers failed to recognise their fingerprints.

"I appeal to all Nigerians to be patient no matter the pains it takes as long as if, as a nation, we can conduct free and fair elections that the whole world will accept," said Mr Jonathan, who returned to successfully cast his vote several hours later.

Astronauts Begin One-Year Space Mission

A Russian Soyuz spacecraft with three crew on board has successfully docked with the International Space Station, Nasa has said.

Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko and American astronaut Scott Kelly are to spend 342 days aboard the orbiting laboratory - about twice as long as a standard mission on the station.

The stay is aimed at measuring the effects of a prolonged period of weightlessness on the human body, a step toward possible missions to Mars or beyond.

The Soyuz capsule - also carrying Russia's Gennady Padalka for a six-month stay - docked about six hours after launching on Saturday from Russia's manned space facility in Kazakhstan.

The trip marks the longest amount of time that two people will live continuously at the ISS, though a handful of Russian cosmonauts spent a year to 14 months at the Russian space station Mir in the 1990s.

"This is the first time we're doing it as an international partnership, which I think is one of the great success stories of the International Space Station," Mr Kelly said at a news conference ahead of the launch.

"If we ever go beyond Low Earth orbit again, perhaps to Mars, because of the cost and the complexity it will most likely be an international mission, so I see this as a stepping stone to that."

The physical effects of a year in space will be closely monitored by doctors on the ground in an unprecedented study of how the human body withstands the rigours of spaceflight before humans plan to journey to Mars.

Mr Kelly said he was concerned about the impacts of radiation and living in zero gravity, particularly in terms of compromised immunity and bone and vision loss.

"I'm hopeful that there is not a big cliff out there with regards to our ability to stay and live and work in space for longer periods of time," he said.

"But we are not going to know that until we have actually done it," he added. "The jury is out."

Mr Kelly and Mr Kornienko, both of whom have flown multiple missions to orbit and have each previously spent about six months on the ISS, are set to stay on the space station until March 2016.

Three crew members - Russian Anton Shkaplerov, Italian Samantha Cristoforetti and American Terry Virts - are currently onboard the space station, due to leave in May.

The arriving crew members are due to coincide with the first space tourist since 2009, British singer Sarah Brightman, who has paid $52m for her 10-day stint planned to start on 1 September.

Space exploration remains a hugely symbolic area of cooperation between Russia and the US despite the freeze in relations over Russia's alleged actions in Ukraine.

Russia last month confirmed that it will continue using the ISS in partnership with Nasa until 2024, after threatening to pull out and stop financing it in 2020.

Drone-Style Systems Could Stop Future Crashes

Technology offers the hope that the Germanwings plane disaster will never happen again, experts have told Sky News.

Systems are already in place to fly unmanned planes from the ground, but they are currently only used in the military sphere.

French prosecutors have said that the captain of the Germanwings plane was locked out of the cockpit as Andreas Lupitz sent the Airbus A320 into a mountain in the French Alps.

In 2009, Honeywell was awarded a patent for a fly-by-wire system that could take control of a plane's cockpit controls and remotely pilot a commercial plane to prevent "unauthorised-flight" and maintain "stable flight".

It has been suggested that the system or others like it could have helped prevent not only the Germanwings disaster but also the disappearance of MH370 if there had been a way to alert ground staff to an on-board emergency.

Mischa Dohler, Head of King's College London's Centre for Telecommunications Research, told Sky News: "We have all the technology in place so the aircraft can talk to the ground directly or via the satellite link, so that is all possible. It's just a question of cost.

"At the end of the day, you just need to pay for the infrastructure or a data plan, in the same way as you might pay for your mobile phones.

"The airlines have to decide whether they are willing to invest that money to add that extra real-time safety to airplanes."

David Cummins, Head of Flight Operations at UMS Aerogroup and an expert on unmanned aircraft, said: "We not at the stage where we are talking about autonomous systems that will operate and look after the aircraft.

"We are talking about automated systems where ultimately man, an operator, will always be in the loop."

He told Sky News there are systems in existence that could keep a plane safer without requiring one to be controlled from the ground.

"We need a number of years (before) we will ever see the first unmanned commercial aircraft but there are checks and balances that can be put into play.

"You can look at collision avoidance - the Germanwings is an example - there is technology that exists and is in place that could help.

"There's also sense-and-avoid systems on aircraft that will also be the pilot's eyes on an aircraft. So there are a number of steps we can take.

"We are years away from doing it, but the technology exists and its about putting the time and effort and ultimately the finance.

"What the aviation industry is very good at is not knee-jerk reaction. You've got to remember that this is still an incredibly safe method of travel."

Jolie Makes First Post-Surgery Appearance

Angelina Jolie has made her first public appearance since revealing she had preventative surgery to remove her ovaries.

She appeared at the 2015 Kids' Choice awards in Los Angeles, where she was named Favourite Villain for her role as the title character in dark fantasy film Maleficent.

The 39-year-old, who was accompanied by two of her children, told the audience: "Thank you so much to all the kids who voted.

"I want to say that when I was little - like Maleficent - I was told that I was different.

"And I felt out of place, and too loud, too full of fire, never good at sitting still, never good at fitting in.

"And then one day I realised something. Something I hope you all realise. Different is good!"

It came less than a week after the Oscar-winning actress revealed she had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed after doctors detected possible signs of cancer.

She wrote about the procedure, which she had two weeks ago, in an opinion piece in the New York Times entitled Diary of a Surgery.

"It is not possible to remove all risk, and the fact is I remain prone to cancer," she wrote.

She also had a double mastectomy in 2013 after it was found she had the faulty BRCA1 gene, which sharply increased the chance of her developing breast and ovarian cancer.

Saudi Bombs 'Destroy All Yemeni Fighter Jets'

Saudi-led airstrikes have destroyed every fighter jet in Yemen and forced Houthi rebels out of government air bases, a Saudi military leader has claimed.

A coalition of 10 countries began bombing Yemen on Thursday, targeting the Shia rebels and allied troops loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Saudi Brigadier General Ahmed bin Hasan Asiri said the aerial campaign had also "devastated" all known Scud missile launching pads in the Arab state.

The international airport in the rebel-controlled capital Sanaa was disabled and 15 pro-rebel troops killed.

The Houthis began their offensive in September, seizing Sanaa, and holding President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi under house arrest.

The rebels later took control of the government and forced Mr Hadi to flee the country.

Mr Hadi accused Iran of being behind the Houthi offensive as leaders at an Arab summit in Egypt agreed to create a military reaction force in the Middle East.

Arab League chief Nabil al Arabi said the Saudi-led offensive would continue until the rebels "withdraw and surrender their weapons".

Egyptian officials said the planned reaction force would be made up of 40,000 elite troops, backed by jets, warships and tanks.

It raises the prospect of a regional conflict pitting Sunni Arab nations against Shia powerhouse Iran.
